"Doula" is an ancient Greek word meaning "woman who serves".  Today doula refers to a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures during labor and an objective viewpoint.  A doula's role is much different than the mother's partner.  The partner offers love and support during childbirth, but often needs support as well and may not know what to do to help you.  A doula recognizes that women have the power to birth and assists the mother in the discovery of her inner-strength.
